Edmonton 3, Nashville 2

NASHVILLE, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Ryan Smyth netted a power-play goal and Mike Comrie scored midway through the third period Saturday night as the Edmonton Oilers spoiled the Nashville Predators' home opener, 3-2.

With two players in the Nashville penalty box midway through the first period, Smyth deposited a rebound past goaltender Mike Dunham to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. It was the fourth power-play goal allowed by the Predators and third while short two skaters.

After serving a penalty in the third, Edmonton rookie Ales Hemsky found Comrie at the Predators' blue line, sending the 5-9 center in alone on Dunham. While in the left faceoff circle, Comrie wristed a shot between the goalie's pads with 9:08 remaining to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead.

Ethan Moreau had two assists for Edmonton while Tommy Salo turned away 29 shots for his first win of the season.
