PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- John LeClair scored his first goal of the preseason and assisted on another Tuesday night as the Philadelphia Flyers won a battle against the New York Rangers, 5-3.
LeClair and Todd Fedoruk assisted on Keith Primeau's fifth goal of the preseason to open the scoring 2:49 into the game. LeClair added his own tally just over three minutes later.
Fedoruk and Eric Desjardins were both later involved in some of the game's six fights, as the Atlantic Division rivals stirred up some bad blood.
The biggest fight of the night came at 13:27 of the second period, when Philadelphia's Donald Brashear mixed it up with New York's Sandy McCarthy, eventually breaking McCarthy's helmet into pieces.
Dale Purinton later tried to get revenge against Brashear, jumping on him from behind with 9:25 to go. Purinton received an instigator penalty, plus a major, misconduct and game misconduct.
There were 38 penalties for 138 minutes, including nine major penalties and seven misconducts. In addition to Purinton, New York's Matthew Barnaby and Philadelphia's Chris Therien were ejected for their fight in the third period.
Kim Johnsson, Jeremy Roenick and Eric Weinrich added goals for Philadelphia, which has won three of its last four games.
New York did not get on the board until 4:36 in the third period, when Jamie Lundmark solved Roman Cechmanek. Trying to win a spot in the Rangers' veteran lineup, the rookie winger scored his fifth goal of the preseason.
Rem Murray and Tom Poti added shorthanded goals for the Rangers. Dixon Ward, who signed with New York on Monday, assisted on Poti's goal with 55 seconds to play.
