Arizona's Farmer to miss 3-6 weeks

TUCSON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- University of Arizona running back Clarence Farmer is scheduled to undergo knee surgery Tuesday, and will be out of action for the next 3-6 weeks.

Head coach John Mackovic announced Monday that Farmer damaged cartilage in his left knee in Saturday's 14-9 victory over North Texas. Farmer led the Pac-10 in rushing last year as a true sophomore.

"It impacts us a lot," Mackovic said. "We're looking at our options now to see what we can do."

The only healthy running back is Farmer's backup, Mike Bell, who ran for 50 years and scored Arizona's only touchdown a week ago. Bell has carried 35 times for 124 yards in four games this season.

Arizona could also be without linebacker Lance Briggs, cornerbacks Darrell Brooks and Luis Nunez, defense linemen Brad Brittain, defensive end Marcus Smith and fullback Joey Willrodt for Saturday's Pac-10 opener against eighth-ranked Oregon.
