St. Louis 4, Milwaukee 0

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Edgar Renteria stroked a two-run double in the eighth inning to snap a scoreless tie Sunday and propel the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Held to just one hit through seven innings by Wayne Franklin, St. Louis erupted for four runs in the eighth against Luis Vizcaino to post its National League-leading 21st win in the month of September.

With two on and one out, Renteria smacked a 3-2 offering to right field to drive in both runners and give him a share of the club record for most RBI by a shortstop, set by Doc Lavan in 1921. Renteria finished the season with 83, but drove in one run as a pinch hitter.

Mike Crudale (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth and notched the win in relief of Andy Benes, who allowed three hits in five innings with three walks and two strikeouts before leaving with an undisclosed injury.

Vizcaino (5-3) surrendered four runs and three hits with a walk and a strikeout while retiring just one batter. Despite issuing six walks, Franklin held the Cardinals hitless through five innings before yielding a leadoff single to Scott Rolen in the sixth. The 28-year-old lefthander struck out four.
