TEMPE, Ariz., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Andrew Walter threw five touchdown passes and Cornell Canidate scored four times Saturday as Arizona State began Pac-10 Conference play with a 65-24 victory over Stanford.
After leading Arizona State to a school-record 22-point comeback at San Diego State last week, Walter completed 22 of 37 passes for 414 yards. He became the first Sun Devils quarterback to throw five touchdowns in a game since Jeff Krohn, now at Massachusetts, accomplished the feat against Oregon on Oct. 28, 2000.
Canidate, a freshman tight end and the younger brother of St. Louis Rams running back Trung Canidate, caught a nine-yard touchdown pass and scored on one-yard run in the first quarter as the Sun Devils (4-1, 1-0 Pac-10) opened a 28-13 lead.
Arizona State took a 38-16 advantage at halftime and increased it to 52-16 with 6:22 left in the third quarter when Canidate scampered in from seven yards.
Overall, Canidate rushed for 77 yards on 15 carries in his first start, helping the Sun Devils win four in a row for the first time since 1997.
The Cardinal (1-1, 0-1) who had won the last three meetings with Arizona State by a combined score of 110-65, could not overcome seven turnovers. They had four interceptions and lost three fumbles.
Walter also threw touchdowns to Shaun McDonald, Mike Pinkard, Skyler Fulton and Darryl Lightfoot.
McDonald had 19 catches for 221 yards, the third-highest total in school history.
Stanford's Chris Lewis completed nine of 21 passes with a touchdown and three interceptions.
