Nuggets wave Mark Jackson

DENVER, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The rebuilding Denver Nuggets got even younger Friday when they waived point guard Mark Jackson four days before the start of training camp.

Jackson, 37, was acquired from New York with forward-center Marcus Camby and the rights to forward Nene Hilario in the draft day trade that sent forward Antonio McDyess and the rights to guard Frank Williams to the Knicks.

A 15-year veteran who is fourth on the NBA's all-time assists list, Jackson had two years remaining on a four-year, $16 million contract. He averaged 8.4 points and 7.4 assists last season and is free to negotiate with any team.

Among those teams who could use an experienced point guard are Boston, Cleveland, the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State.

Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandewghe has done some major reshuffling during the offseason, acquiring young players and veterans whose contracts expire at the end of the 2002-03 season.

As a result, untested second-year player Kenny Satterfield appears to have the inside track at the starting point guard position. Veterans Rod Strickland, Tim Hardaway and Mookie Blaylock are available free agents.
