BALI, Indonesia, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Paraguay's Rossana Neffa-de los Rios upended top seed and local favorite Tamarine Tanasugarn, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round Thursday at the Wismilak International.
Neffa-de los Rios advanced to her second quarterfinals of the season and first since Bogota in February. The mother of one has never reached a WTA Tour final, but was a semifinalist twice last season.
Second seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario beat fellow Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Sanchez-Viario, who received a first-round bye, recorded only her third win in her last nine matches.
The 30-year-old Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario is one of only two seeded players remaining in the draw after Thursday's losses by Tanasugarn and No. 4 Nicole Pratt of Australia, who endured a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to Spain's Marta Marrero.
American qualifier Sarah Taylor advanced to her first career quarterfinal with a victory over countrywoman Corina Morariu. Taylor was leading, 6-2, 1-2, before Morariu retired with right shoulder tendinitis.
Morariu was diagnosed with leukemia last year and returned to action this July after undergoing chemotherapy.
A pair of Russians will square off in the quarterfinals on Friday after Lina Krasnoroutskaya beat Italian qualifier Antonella Serra Zanetti, 6-1, 7-5, and Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame Virginie Razzano of France, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-2.
