Senators trade Salo for Schaefer

OTTAWA, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The Ottawa Senators on Saturday traded defenseman Sami Salo to the Vancouver Canucks for left wing Peter Schaefer.

After making the deal, the Senators gave the 25-year-old Schaefer a three-year contract. He had been holding out with Vancouver, spending all of last season in the Finnish Elite League.

Salo is a steady stay-at-home defenseman who will fortify a corps that lost Scott Lachance and Jason Strudwick to free agency.

A four-year veteran who made $800,000 last season, Salo has 19 goals, 50 assists and 50 penalty minutes in 195 regular season games and three goals and two assists in 26 playoff contests.

Schaefer played all 82 games with Vancouver two seasons ago, recording a career-high 20 goals and 16 assists. He moved on to Turku in Finland, where he had 16 goals in 33 games last year.

In parts of three seasons with the Canucks, Schaefer has 36 goals and 39 assists in 178 games.
