Louisiana-Monroe coach resigns

MONROE, La., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Bobby Keasler, who posted just an 8-28 record in his three-plus seasons as Louisiana-Monroe football coach, announced his resignation Wednesday.

The Indians are off to an 0-3 start this season, losing last week to Division I-AA McNeese State, 24-19. The previous week, they were routed by Kansas State, 68-0.

Keasler recorded a 78-34-2 record in nine seasons at McNeese State but enjoyed little success at Louisiana-Monroe. He posted a 5-6 record in his first season in 1999, but went 1-10 and 2-9 the following two years.

Assistant head coach Mike Collins, a member of Louisiana-Monroe's staff since 1998, was named to replace Keasler on an interim basis. He was elevated to assistant head coach in June.

"Coach Keasler had a great deal of confidence in Mike Collins and so do I," Indians athletic director Bruce Hanks said.
