Syracuse 63, Rhode Island 17

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- R.J. Anderson passed for 306 yards and two touchdowns and Walter Reyes rushed for 128 yards and three scores Saturday to help the Syracuse Orangemen crush Rhode Island, 63-17.

Anderson averaged nearly 24 yards per completion, connecting on 13 of 18 passes. They included an 87-yard touchdown to Jamel Riddle that gave Syracuse (1-2) a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The teams combined 45 points in a wild second quarter, with Syracuse scoring 28.

Rhode Island (1-2) closed to within 28-17 on Justin Westley's 15-yard run with 3:15 left in the quarter, but the Orangemen scored twice in the final 2:21 to open a 42-17 halftime cushion.

Reyes scored on a 46-yard run before Anderson found Riddle for a 29-yard strike with five seconds left in the half.

Damien Rhodes added 94 yards and two touchdowns for the Orangemen, who amassed 629 total yards.

Jayson Davis completed seven of 12 passes for 145 yards for Rhode Island. Jason Ham paced the Rams on the ground with 103 yards on just eight carries.

Rhode Island gave up 339 yards through the air in last week's 37-19 loss to Hofstra.
