Ohka, Hammond suspended

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Montreal Expos pitcher Tomo Ohka and Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Hammond were suspended Friday for their actions in a game last weekend.

Major League Baseball vice president of on-field operations Bob Watson announced the suspensions, which are to begin Friday night unless the players appeal.

Ohka, a starter, was suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at and hitting Braves outfielder Andruw Jones in the bottom of the fifth inning of Saturay's 4-0 win by Atlanta.

Jones had homered in his first two at-bats before Ohka's pitch hit him in the batting helmet, leaving a bruise near his left ear and cheek. He sat out the following game.

Hammond, a reliever, was suspended three games for intentionally throwing at and hitting Expos outfielder Brad Wilkerson with the first pitch of the seventh.

Hammond and Braves manager Bobby Cox were ejected, but Wilkerson said afterward he was expecting a member of his team to be hit with a pitch.
