Texas 3, Seattle 2

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Todd Greene's run-scoring groundout in the eighth inning snapped a tie and the Texas Rangers held on Tuesday night for a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Texas posted its seventh win in nine games despite having its major league-record home run streak halted.

The Rangers had homered in 27 consecutive games, two more than the previous record - set by the 1941 New York Yankees - and had not been held homerless since Aug. 10. Texas was 18-10 during the streak but proved that home runs are not the only key to their recent success.

Texas had just five hits, including a pair of doubles by Herbert Perry, who opened the eighth with a double against Seattle starter Joel Pineiro (13-6). After Kevin Mench sacrificed, Arthur Rhodes entered and Greene pinch-hit for Mike Lamb. Greene grounded out to third base and pinch runner Donnie Sadler scored for a 3-2 edge.

Rich Rodriguez (3-1) recorded the victory after getting the final out of the eighth inning. Francisco Cordero struck out the side in the ninth inning for his eighth save.
