Panthers DE gets contract extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Defensive end Mike Rucker of the Carolina Panthers has signed a five-year contract extension with the team.

Rucker, who set a team record for defensive linemen with nine sacks in 2002, is beginning his fourth season with in the NFL. He was a second-round pick in the 1999 draft from Nebraska.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the new deal is worth as much as $24.5 million and includes $5.5 million in guaranteed money.

He had been scheduled to make $577,500 this year, in what would have been the final season of his rookie contract.

"We are very pleased to extend Mike's contract so that he will remain a Carolina Panther," said General Manager Marty Hurney. "He has developed into an integral part of the foundation of the team as well as one of its leaders."

Rucker is coming off his best campaign as a pro after starting all 16 games in 2001, and recording 72 tackles and four forced fumbles to go along with his team-high nine sacks.

In his three seasons with Carolina, Rucker has posted 166 tackles and 14 1/2 sacks despite being a starter for just one year.

"I'm happy to be able to continue to be a part of the organization, especially now that I feel we are on the upswing," Rucker said.

Also, team officials Wednesday afternoon were keeping a close eye on ticket sales for Sunday's season-opening contest against the Baltimore Ravens. Since Ericsson Stadium opened in 1996, the Panthers have never had a home field sellout.
