Rams acquire WR Edwards from Steelers

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Rams added a potential weapon to their receiving corps Saturday when they acquired former first-round draft pick Troy Edwards from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Terms of the trade were not released, but ESPN reported that the Rams parted with a sixth-round pick in the 2004 draft.

Despite boasting arguably the NFL's best offense, the Rams had a need at wideout, with No. 3 receiver Az-Zahir Hakim leaving via free agency and Terrence Wilkins expected to miss at least two regular season games.

Veteran Ricky Proehl also has been banged up during the preseason and Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch has struggled to make the transition from quarterback to wide receiver.

Although he might have had a hard time even making Pittsburgh's roster, Edwards could give the Rams another viable weapon. He caught 61 passes for 714 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie in 1999, but has totaled only 37 receptions the past two years.

Edwards became expendable in Pittsburgh when the Steelers drafted versatile Antwaan Randle El in the second round this spring and signed Terance Mathis as a free agent.

A collegiate star at Louisiana Tech, Edwards also returns kicks and punts, averaging 20.8 and 9.1 yards, respectively.
