Dallas 20, Oakland 6

IRVING, Texas, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Quincey Carter passed for a touchdown and led three scoring drives Friday night as the Dallas Cowboys spoiled the NFL coaching debut of Bill Callahan with a 20-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

A 2001 second-round draft pick out of Georgia, Carter played nine games as a rookie last season and struggled as the Cowboys' offense was among the NFL's worst.

With a new offensive coordinator in Bruce Coslet and an improved defense, Dallas is expecting bigger things from Carter this year.

Carter got off to a good start as he played the entire first half and led the Cowboys to two touchdowns and a field goal. He threw a one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mike Lucky early in the second quarter and finished 10 of 13 for 96 yards.

Chad Hutchinson, a former pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals who signed as a free agent to pursue football, played the second half for Dallas and went five of 11 for 59 yards with an interception.

Troy Hambrick, the backup to Emmitt Smith, scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter for the Cowboys. Smith did not play.

Callahan, the Raiders' offensive coordinator last season, took over for Jon Gruden, who left to take the Tampa Bay job.

Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon played one series, going four of six for 52 yards. Backup Marques Tuiasosopo was 10 of 19 for 123 yards. Oakland also got field goals of 29 and 39 yards from Sebastian Janikowski.
