Longhorns lose star tight end

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Texas tight end Bo Scaife, an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection last year, has decided to undergo surgery on his left knee and will miss the entire season, the school announced Wednesday.

Scaife made the decision after meeting with team surgeon Dr. Carey Windler and coach Mack Brown. The 6-3, 250-pound junior will help coach the Longhorns' tight ends before rejoining the team for 2003 spring practice.

"It's a setback, but I need to get it handled so that I can get back to 100 percent," Scaife said. "In the meantime, I'm looking forward to helping the guys any way I can. I'll be out there every day, taking care of my knee and helping to coach and push my teammates. My role has changed, but I'll help this team any way I can."

Scaife caught 30 passes for 396 yards and a touchdown last season, capping it with a career-best seven catches for 84 yards in the Holiday Bowl.

"It's a tough blow for the team and even moreso for Bo, who has worked so hard to put himself in a position to be one of the top tight ends in the country," Brown said. "Thank goodness he's not a senior and he will be able to get back on the field in the spring."

The Longhorns also learned Wednesday that junior cornerback Monti Collier will be giving up football following three broken clavicles and two separate surgical procedures.
