Dotson suffers career-threatening injury

ASHBURN, Va., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Veteran Washington Redskins defensive tackle Santana Dotson likely will miss the remainder of the season and may not play again after he ruptured his left Achilles tendon in Tuesday's practice, according to head trainer Dean Kleinschmidt.

Dotson was rehabilitating his left calf and left Achilles for the first two weeks of training camp, and had not participated in drills or practice with the team.

Kleinschmidt said the injuries were apparently unrelated, but Dotson ruptured the Achilles in one-on-one drills.

Dotson is scheduled to undergo surgery on the Achilles at a hospital in Virginia. While the duration of his absence is unknown, Kleinschmidt said injuries of this type are "generally" season-ending.

Dotson signed for a one-year minimum for $775,000 as a free agent on June 4 after playing with Green Bay the last six seasons. Last season, he reclaimed his starting spot at defensive tackle after missing the entire 2000 campaign with a torn quadriceps and collected 39 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in 16 games.

He was making his training camp debut with Washington.

"He worked so hard in the offseason and we only got to see him in a few plays," defensive line coach Ricky Hunley told the Washington Post. "We got to see a few plays from him in minicamp."

A source told the paper that there is a "strong fear" that the injury could end Dotson's NFL career after 10 years.

Dotson started 129 of 152 games in his career and had 312 tackles, including 49 sacks, forced 11 fumbles and defended 27 passes. He played 114 consecutive games before missing a start in 1999 with the Packers.
