Arizona 12, NY Mets 7

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Mark Guthrie surrendered a three-run homer to Luis Gonzalez in the seventh inning to end the longest scoreless streak in the majors this season as the surging Arizona Diamondbacks handed the New York Mets their third straight loss, 12-7.

Guthrie (5-1) had gone 27 innings over 33 appearances since May 25 without allowing a run. Brought into a 7-7 game, he issued a leadoff walk to Craig Counsell in the seventh and got in even more trouble when third baseman John Valentin threw away Greg Colbrunn's error, putting runners at the corners.

Gonzalez took a strike and fouled off five pitches before homering off the base of the scoreboard beyond the right-center field fence. It was his 24th homer of the season, second in as many days and fourth on Arizona's seven-game road trip.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Mets closer Armando Benitez yielded a tying homer to the light-hitting Counsell in the top of the ninth for just his third blown save in 29 chances. The Diamondbacks went on to an 8-5, 10-inning triumph.

Arizona padded its lead in this game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Quinton McCracken and an RBI single by Steve Finley, who had three hits and four RBI.

Mike Koplove (3-0), the third of five Diamondbacks' pitchers, tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Byung-Hyun Kim got the last five outs for his 27th save, nailing down Arizona's third straight victory and 11th in 13 games.

Rookie Ty Wigginton was a lone bright spot for the Mets with four hits, including his first major league homer, a three-run blast in the bottom of the third. It was one of four home runs for New York, which fell to 5-7 on a 13-game homestand.
