SAN DIEGO, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Brian Lawrence did not allow an earned run over eight innings Friday night, and Trevor Hoffman recovered from a disastrous outing to notch his 27th save as the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-2.

Lawrence (10-6) yielded two unearned runs and five hits to improve to 6-2 in 12 home starts this season. He walked three and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts.

Hoffman blew a ninth-inning lead Thursday in an 8-7 setback to the Chicago Cubs, but bounced back to toss a perfect ninth. He struck out one and tied Rollie Fingers for sixth place on the all-time list with 341 saves.

Phil Nevin went 3-for-4 and drove in a run and Deivi Cruz collected two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who have won six of their last eight home games.

Rookie knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (1-2) scattered three runs, two earned, and nine hits over six innings in taking the loss.
