Oakland 8, Detroit 4

OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Tim Hudson pitched seven innings and Scott Hatteberg had a three-run double in the fourth Saturday inning as the Oakland Athletics downed the Detroit Tigers, 8-4.

Hudson (8-9) had been 0-2 with a 6.38 ERA in his last three starts, but rebounded to allow three runs and four hits on Saturday. The righthander threw 55 of 86 pitches for strikes and improved to 6-2 lifetime against Detroit.

Oakland scored twice in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. Mark Ellis led off with a triple and John Mabry tripled one out later. Ramon Hernandez followed with a double off Detroit starter Jose Lima (2-5) for a 3-1 advantage.

The Athletics added three runs in the fourth to break open the game. Terrence Long singled with one out and Mabry walked. Hernandez flied out and Ray Durham walked before Hatteberg followed with his clutch hit down the right field line.

Oakland shortstop Miguel Tejada extended his career-high hitting streak to 23 games with an RBI double in the first inning that opened the scoring.

Rookie Carlos Pena continued his hot hitting against his former team by going two for four with a homer and three RBI for Detroit.
