Seattle came back from a 3-0 deficit and the game was tied in the eighth inning when McLemore led off with a walk off Tigers reliever Julio Santana (3-3), stole second and went to third when catcher Brandon Inge threw wildly.

John Olerud then snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a clean single to center, giving the Mariners their first lead.

Detroit was poised to take the lead in the top of the eighth. Seattle starter Freddy Garcia walked Damion Easley to open the inning. Arthur Rhodes (7-2) then entered and yielded a single by Bobby Higginson.

Randall Simon, the next hitter, grounded into a double play thanks to a clever defensive play by second baseman Bret Boone, who fielded the ball right in the baseline, forcing Higginson to retreat back to first. He then fired to first

to retire Simon and Olerud threw to shortstop Carlos Guillen, who tagged Higginson out at second. Rhodes then struck out Robert Fick to end the inning.
