Capitals re-sign Ciernik, Whitfield

WASHINGTON, July 23 (UPI) -- The Washington Capitals on Tuesdayre-signed restricted free agents left wing Ivan Ciernik and

right wing Trent Whitfield.

Ciernik, 24, played in six games with the Capitals last season after being claimed off waivers from the Ottawa Senators, registering one assist. The 6-1, 235-pounder had one goal and three assists in 29 games overall.

Whitfield, 23, tallied one assist and 28 penalty minutes in 24 games with the Capitals last season. He also played one game with the New York Rangers before the Capitals re-acquired his

rights in January.

The Capitals also re-signed restricted free agent left wing Mark Murphy and defenseman Chris Hajt.

Murphy, 25, spent last season with Portland of the American Hockey League, collecting 20 goals and 37 assists in 57 games.

Hajt, 24, played 39 games for Hamilton of the American League, recording two goals and three assists.
