Los Angeles 4, San Francisco 2

LOS ANGELES, July 20 (UPI) -- Dave Roberts had three hits, scored three runs and stole three bases Saturday to rally Los Angeles past San Francisco, 4-2, moving the Dodgers into second-place in the National League West.

Roberts' bases-loaded single in the eighth scored two runs and snapped a 2-2 tie, after which Eric Gagne came on to pitch a perfect ninth for his 34th save and preserve the win for Paul Qauntrill (2-3).

Jeff Kent hit a solo home run for the Giants in the first while Felix Rodriguez (3-6) took the loss in relief. San Francisco slipped a half game behind the Dodgers.

Japan's Tsuyoshi Shinjo had two hits for the Giants.

San Francisco played without Barry Bonds, whose 28 home runs put him third in the National League. He strained his left hamstring while chasing down a ball in the gap Friday night and was listed as day-to-day.

The Dodgers also lost one of their star players in the seventh when a 94-mph fastball from Rodriguez sailed in on Eric Karros, glanced off his arm and hit him in the chin. Karros was sprawled face down in the dirt for a few minutes before being helped to the dugout. He was diagnosed with a bruised jaw.
