Pavel reaches second-round

STUTTGART, Germany, July 15 (UPI) -- Romania's Andrei Pavel, the fifth seed, advanced to the second round of the Mercededes Cup Monday, outlasting Dominik Hrbaty of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

The first-round matches between No. 6 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy, and Hicham Arazi of Morocco and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia were postponed until Tuesday due to darkness.

The 28-year-old Pavel, who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, overcame Hrbaty for the first time in three career encounters.

Felix Mantilla of Spain, Lars Burgsmuller of Germany and Adrian Voinea of Romania also reached the second round on Monday.

Mantilla overwhelmed German wild-card Jens Knippschild, 6-3, 6-1, Burgsmuller outdueled compatriot and wild-card entrant Bjorn Phau, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, and Voinea defefeated Anthony Dupuis of France, 6-4, 6-2.
