Reports: Bobby Bonds had kidney tumor

SAN FRANCISCO, July 13 (UPI) -- Former San Francisco Giants player and coach Bobby Bonds is recovering from surgery to remove a tumor from his kidney earlier this week, according to published reports.

Bonds, the father of Giants slugger Barry Bonds, is a special assistant in the club's player personnel department.

Representatives at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., confirmed that Bonds was admitted at 1:34 a.m. Thursday morning. Tests are still being done to determine whether or not the tumor was cancerous, according to sources.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the former outfielder complained of back pain before having the tumor removed.

The Giants' media relations department had no official comment on the matter, citing personal privacy issues. Barry Bonds left Pacific Bell Park at the same time the media was allowed into the clubhouse for postgame interviews and was unavailable for comment.

"He's doing OK," Barry Bonds told the San Jose Mercury News before Friday night's game against Colorado at Pacific Bell Park.

The elder Bonds, who turned 56 years old June 25, played for eight teams during a 14-year big-league career. He compiled .268 career batting average, with 332 home runs and 1,024 RBIs. He was the Giants' hitting coach from 1993-96.
