Jay Fielder has hip surgery

MIAMI, July 13 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Saturday, putting his status in doubt for the start of training camp.

Doctors repaired a labral tear in Fiedler's hip.

The Dolphins said Fiedler is expected to make a full recovery. He will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp, which begins July 25.

"It was felt that if Jay were to continue to play with this condition, it would have a negative effect on his performance during the 2002 season," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said. "As a result, the decision was made to have surgery now. We hope Jay will be ready shortly after the start of training camp."

If Fiedler is sidelined for an extended period, veteran Ray Lucas would move into a starting role. Miami is installing a new offensive scheme this season under new coordinator Norv Turner.

"I'm not worried if I miss a little bit of time during training camp," Fiedler said. "I've been here the entire offseason and know what we're doing with our new offense. The important thing is to make sure that this didn't become a problem during the regular season."

It is not the first time Fiedler has had hip problems. In August 2000, he missed three preseason games after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip joint.
