LeClair undergoes minor back surgery

PHILADELPHIA, July 9 (UPI) -- After missing 66 games of the 2000-01 season due to surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, five-time All-Star left wing John LeClair of the Philadelphia Flyers underwent minor surgery Tuesday to remove a buildup of scar tissue.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins, an orthopedic surgeon, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles. LeClair is expected to begin rehabilitation in two to three weeks.

LeClair, 33, struggled last season, scoring just 25 goals and 51 points in 82 games. However, he enjoyed success in the Salt Lake City Olympics, netting six goals in six games for the silver medal-winning United States team.

A three-time 50-goal scorer, LeClair signed a five-year, $45 million contract with Philadelphia in June 2001 despite undergoing back surgery eight months earlier.
