NL pitching staff suffers losses

MILWAUKEE, July 7 (UPI) -- The National League's pitching staff for Tuesday's All-Star Game will have a vastly different look.

Arizona Diamondbacks lefthander Randy Johnson was one of three pitchers to announce Sunday that they had withdrawn from the Mid-Summer Classic.

Johnson joined Atlanta Braves lefthander Tom Glavine and St. Louis Cardinals righthander Matt Morris as members of the NL team to take themselves out of Tuesday's game.

An announcement was made during the Diamondbacks' game on Sunday against San Francisco that Johnson was withdrawing from the game so he could get extra rest for his scheduled start on Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Johnson's replacement will be Atlanta setup man Mike Remlinger.

Baseball's most intimidating pitcher and the reigning three-time Cy Young Award winner in the NL, Johnson is 12-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 19 games this season. "The Big Unit" is second in the league with 171 strikeouts, behind only teammate Curt Schilling.

Glavine, who was a candidate to start the game for the NL, was replaced by Philadelphia Phillies righthander Vicente Padilla. Morris, the St. Louis Cardinals ace, was replaced by San Francisco Giants closer Robb Nen.

No reason for Morris' withdrawal was given.

Glavine, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, is off to his best start in what could be his final season in Atlanta. But the 36-year-old Glavine, who is 11-4 with a league-leading 2.27 ERA, has been bothered a blister on his index finger while battling flu-like symptoms over the last 10 days.

"He's (Glavine) just not going to be able to make it," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He's had the flu and the blister. It's the smart decision to have him not pitch."

Glavine has been selected to play in the All-Star Game eight times and can be a free agent after the season.

Padilla is 10-5 with a 3.05 ERA in 18 starts with the Phillies. He will be making his first All-Star appearance.

Morris, 27, is 10-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 19 starts this season. He last pitched Friday and was tagged for six runs in a loss to Los Angeles.

Nen, 32, is the sixth reliever on manager Bob Brenly's squad. The longtime closer is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.62 and 23 saves and will be making his second All-Star appearance.

With the withdrawal of Glavine, Brenly likely could give Schilling the starting nod. Schilling was supposed to start last year's game but Johnson stepped in at the last second and made his fourth career start.
