Detroit 71, Sacramento 60

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 30 (UPI) -- The Detroit Shock finally registered their first win of the season Sunday, getting double-doubles from Swin Cash and rookie Ayana Walker in a 71-60 triumph over the Sacramento Monarchs.

Detroit had lost 13 games to open the season, including three under new coach Bill Laimbeer. But the Shock held the Monarchs to one basket over an eight-minute stretch in the second half for their first win since last season's finale on Aug. 14.

Lady Grooms made two free throws with 11:31 to go in the second half, giving Sacramento a 42-38 lead. But Cash answered with a layup and Deanna Nolan made a three-pointer to put Detroit ahead for good, 43-42, with 11:22 to play.

The baskets were part of an 18-4 run that gave the Shock a 56-46 cushion with 5:32 remaining. Tangela Smith finally ended the Monarchs' drought from the field when she hit a jumper with 3:57 left.

Cash had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Walker added 13 points and a season-high 10 boards for Detroit, which shot under 36 percent but held Sacramento to 30 percent.
