Roddick ousted at Wimbledon

LONDON, June 29 (UPI) -- Britain's Greg Rusedski, the 23rd seed, fired 12 aces and recorded 23 winners Friday en route to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 rout of No. 11 Andy Roddick in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.

A year ago, Roddick received similar treatment from hard-serving Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia. The eventual champion cut down Roddick in four sets in the third round.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia also continued the procession of seeded players marching out of Wimbledon in the first week. Belgium's Xavier Malisse, the 27th seed, upset Kafelnikov, the fifth seed, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Americans Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati, the second and third seeds in the women's draw, fought their way into the round of 16.

The departure of Roddick and Kafelnikov leaves No. 22 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador as the highest remaining seed in the bottom half of the men's singles draw. No. 2 Marat Safin of Russia, No. 3 Andre Agassi and fellow American and No. 6 Pete Sampras all fell in the second round.

Roddick continued his struggles at Grand Slam events in 2002. The 19-year-old was forced to retire in the second round of the Australian Open due to injury and was knocked out in the opening round of the French Open.

World Cup enters final weekend

DAEGU, South Korea, June 29 (UPI) -- Co-host South Korea and Turkey exceeded all expectations in the World Cup, but had to settle for playing in the third-place match Saturday, one in which teams traditionally have a hard time going full throttle.

However, in this matchup, a lot of pride for both sides and the prestige of finishing third may be incentive enough to go all out.

South Korea, the first Asian team to reach the final four, had a strong run to the semifinals. But those performances were overshadowed in the knockout stages by accusations of favorable treatment from officials.

The Korean run included wins against some top European sides -- Poland, Portugal, Italy and Spain. But the string came to an end against a superior and more experienced Germany in the semifinals.

The championship game will be played when Germany and Brazil meet in the World Cup for the first time. The countries will both be making their seventh appearance in the final.

The World Cup All-Star team was also announced Friday and American captain Claudio Reyna was unexpectedly included on the squad.

Yankees crush Mets

NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- Jorge Posada homered from both sides of the plate for the fourth time in his career and drove in five runs Friday night and Robin Ventura had four RBI as the New York Yankees ran over the New York Mets, 11-5.

The Yankees scored a total of six runs in losing two of three games to the Mets at Shea Stadium earlier this month. But they matched that in the first three innings against Jeff D'Amico (4-7), who yielded seven runs in four-plus frames.

Posada struck the big blow in a five-run third inning with a three-run homer. Batting lefthanded, he hit a blast over the right field fence. In the fifth, he pulled a two-run homer over the left field fence off lefthanded reliever Bobby Jones. It was Posada's seventh career two-homer game.

Ventura, the active leader with 15 grand slams, came to the plate three times with the bases loaded against his former team and produced a two-run double and a pair of sacrifice flies. He hit a game-winning two-run homer in the 10th inning two weeks ago at Shea Stadium.

Mike Mussina (11-3) tied Derek Lowe of Boston and Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox for the most wins in the American League, despite allowing five runs -- including three homers -- in five innings.

In Boston, Vinny Castilla and Henry Blanco delivered RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning as the Atlanta Braves continued their torrid June with a 4-2 triumph over the Boston Red Sox.

Boston scored a run in the seventh to tie it, but Gary Sheffield led off the ninth with Atlanta's first extra-base hit of the game, a double off the top of the scoreboard in left field.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (2-3), who replaced Rich Garces to start the ninth, retired Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones on flyouts, but Castilla dropped a single in front of center fielder Johnny Damon to score Sheffield with the go-ahead run.

Darren Bragg, who reached in all five plate appearances, walked before Blanco singled past diving right fielder Trot Nixon to make it 4-2.

John Smoltz breezed through the bottom of the ninth, striking out Damon to record his 12th straight save and 26th of the season. He nailed down the win for reliever Mike Remlinger (4-0), who pitched a hitless eighth.

Other interleague results: Chicago White Sox 13, Chicago Cubs 9; Philadelphia 6, Baltimore 4; Pittsburgh 3, Detroit 1; Montreal 2, Toronto 1; Cleveland 8, Arizona 2; Tampa Bay 4, Florida 0; Minnesota 5, Milwaukee 1; Houston 6, Texas 5; Kansas City 14, San Diego 10.

In the National League, St. Louis defeated Cincinnati, 3-2.

Walter Hall leads Senior Open

OWINGS MILLS, Md., June 29 (UPI) -- Walter Hall, with only one win to his credit since turning 50 in 1997, shot a 6-under 65 Friday that put him one shot in front of Tom Kite and Jose Maria Canizares after two rounds of the U.S. Senior Open.

Hall was one of 30 players who had to return to the Caves Valley Golf Club course early Friday to complete the first round after a late-afternoon thunderstorm suspended play Thursday. Another storm rumbled through Friday and delayed things for an hour.

Hall, whose lone victory on the elder circuit came last year in Canada, did not make a bogey in posting his 65, giving him a two-day total of 7-under 135. Kite, who also was one of those having to finish his first round early Friday, shot a 4-under 67 to get to 136 while Canizares reached that total with his second straight 68.

Alone in fourth place at 5-under 137 was R.W. Eaks, who owned the lead after the first round with a tournament-equaling score of 64. He slipped back with a 73 Friday.

Tom Watson, Isao Aoki and Fred Gibson shared fifth place at 138 while Allen Doyle was at 139 and Ed Dougherty at 140. The other players to break par for 36 holes, all at 1-under, included Raymond Floyd, Jay Overton, Vicente Fernandez, Don Pooley, Gil Morgan, Lanny Wadkins and Terry Mauney.

Hale Irwin survived the 36-hole cut, but found himself far back in the pack at 147 following a 74. Defending champion Bruce Fleisher missed the cut at 151 while Arnold Palmer shot 82-85 and then admitted he was dejected at turning in such poor scores.

"The fans were wonderful," he said. "They were very, very supportive for two days. If it hadn't been for the fans and just some of my own principles, I wouldn't even have finished. But I've never done that. So I still have a clean record on that one."

In Memphis, Glen Hnatiuk shot his second straight 6-under-par 65 and took the lead in a PGA Tour event for the first time in his career. Winless in five years on the PGA Tour, Hnatiuk was one stroke ahead of Notah Begay III, Jay Haas and Pat Bates at the FedEx St. Jude Open.

De Ferran wins IRL pole

RICHMOND, Va., June 29 (UPI) -- For the third time this season Friday, team owner Roger Penske's two-car lineup swept the front row for an IRL race.

Gil de Ferran scored his second consecutive pole for the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway. De Ferran knocked his teammate, two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, off the pole late in the qualifying session.

De Ferran drove his Dallara/Chevrolet around the 3/4-mile oval at a top speed of 168.705 miles per hour. Castroneves' fast lap was 168.013 mph in another Dallara/Chevrolet.

It was de Ferran's third pole of the season and gave Marlboro Team Penske its fourth pole on the four short ovals so far this season.

Team Penske also swept the front row at Nazareth Speedway in April and Pikes Peak International Raceway two weeks ago.

Castroneves enters Saturday night's race with a 32-point lead over de Ferran in the battle for the IRL championship.
