Housley was claimed by the Blackhawks off waivers from the Calgary Flames last September. He appeared in 80 games for Chicago, collecting 15 goals and 24 assists with 34 penalty minutes, and helped the Blackhawks reach the playoffs for the first time in five years.

In the postseason, he had one assist and four penalty minutes in five games.

The 38-year-old Housley has 332 goals and 871 assists in 1,437 games. He ranks as the all-time points and assists leader among United States-born players in NHL history. He began his career in Buffalo and also has played for Winnipeg, St. Louis, New Jersey and Washington.

The signing of Housley comes one day after the Blackhawks re-signed veteran left wing Bob Probert.
