SAN DIEGO, June 16 (UPI) -- Oliver Perez threw five strong innings and Wiki Gonzalez provided the big blow with his first homer of the season Sunday as the San Diego Padres posted a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Perez (1-0), allowed two runs and four hits while striking out seven in a 107-pitch outing. The 20-year-old lefthander, currently the youngest player in the majors, compiled a 4-3 mark with a 1.13 ERA in 13 appearances at Class AA and Class A this season.

Seattle took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth before Ryan Klesko and Bubba Trammell opened with singles. Mariners starter Jamie Moyer (6-3) induced Ron Gant to ground into a double play before walking Trenidad Hubbard.

Gonzalez followed with a three-run blast to left field to give San Diego the lead for good.

The Padres' bullpen combined to go four innings and yielded just a pair of hits. Closer Trevor Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save in as many opportunities.
