Hewitt advances at Stella Artois

LONDON, June 12 (UPI) -- Australian Lleyton Hewitt, trying to become the first player to win three straight Stella Artois Championships since John McEnore, captured his second-round match Wednesday.

Hewitt, who received a bye in the first round, defeated American qualifier Mardy Fish, 7-5, 6-3.

Hewitt has won three tournaments this year. McEnroe won this event from 1979-81.

Second-seeded Tim Henman of Britain also advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over South African Neville Godwin. But third-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and fourth seed Max Mirnyi of Belarus both were eliminated on Wednesday.

Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands needed a tiebreaker for the second straight match as he recorded a 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 triumph over Mirnyi. Michael Russell of the United States beat Enqvist, 6-3, 7-5.

Fifth seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands defeated Jan Vacek of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-2, but seventh-seeded American James Blake was upset by counrtyman Vincent Spadea, 6-3, 6-4.

American Todd Martin, the hard-serving ninth seed, cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over counrtyman Jeff Morrison, 6-3, 6-3 and 10th seed Wayne Ferreira of South Africa had a little more difficulty with British wild card Gilles Elseneer, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.

No. 12 Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States breezed past American qualifier Mike Bryan, 6-3, 6-4, but 13th seed Adrian Voinea of Romania was ousted by Slovakian Karol Kucera, 6-2, 6-4.

No. 14 Olivier Rochus posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Israel's Harel Levy in the first meeting between the players.

In other matches: Australia's Wayne Arthurs defeated 16th seed Sargis Sargsian of Armenia, 6-2, 6-3; American wild card Robby Ginepri got past Switzerland's Marc Rosset, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4; and Korea's Hyng-Taik Lee beat Finland's Gouichi Motomura, 6-4, 6-0.
