NY Mets 4, Cleveland 3

CLEVELAND, June 7 (UPI) -- Edgardo Alfonzo hit a solo homer in the first inning and snapped a tie with an RBI single in the seventh Friday night as the New York Mets halted a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Al Leiter (6-5) got back on track, allowing three runs and five hits over seven innings with four walks and a strikeout to halt a personal three-game losing streak. In his previous three starts, Leiter had a 9.82 ERA.

The Indians erased a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth on Jim Thome's two-run homer, but the Mets quickly answered.

Danys Baez (5-5) hit Vance Wilson, starting in place of the ill Mike Piazza, to start the seventh. Wilson moved up on Timo Perez's sacrifice and scored on Alfonzo's single to center field.

Milton Bradley nearly gave the Indians the lead in the bottom of the eighth but his bid for a three-run homer against Armando Benitez came up short as center fielder Perez made the catch against the wall.

Benitez tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 12th save, giving up a two-out walk to Chris Magruder.

In his return to Cleveland, Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar went one for four with a double. Alomar played with the Indians for three seasons before being dealt to New York in the offseason.

The Mets scored a pair of runs in the second to open a 3-0 lead. After Baez walked Mo Vaughn and Roger Cedeno, Rey Ordonez reached on an infield single to load the bases.

Right fielder Magruder dropped Wilson's flyball for an error that allowed a run to score and Perez followed with an RBI single. Baez avoided further damage by getting Alfonzo to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom on the second, but settled for only one run as Chad Allen grounded into a double play.
