ORLANDO, Fla., May 30 (UPI) -- Nykesha Sales and Shannon Johnson scored 22 points apiece Thursday night as the Orlando Miracle posted their first season-opening victory, an 80-66 triumph over the Detroit Shock.
Orlando was winless in three previous season openers, but turned things around under rookie coach Dee Brown. Sales and Johnson combined to make 12 of 22 shots from the floor and 19 of 22 free throws.
The Miracle had a 56-55 lead with 10:49 remaining before going on a 13-2 run. Sales and Johnson each scored four points during the burst, which gave Orlando a 69-57 cushion with 4:51 to go.
Sales made a layup and four free throws in the final three minutes as the Miracle. Orlando has won six of the last seven overall meetings with Detroit.
Johnson did most of her damage in the first half, scoring 17 of Orlando's first 25 points in the opening 10 1/2 minutes.
Adrienne Johnson and Taj MacWilliams-Franklin added eight points each for the Miracle, who shot 46 percent from the floor and made 27 of 34 free throws.
Rookie Swin Cash scored 16 points and Wendy Palmer added 15 for Detroit, which went to the free-throw line only 18 times and committed 27 turnovers.
