Padres activate Gant

DENVER, May 21 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres activated outfielder Ron Gant from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Gant, 37, missed 24 games after being placed on the DL on April 26 with a fractured right pinky. He is batting just .189 with two home runs and six RBI in 15 contests this season, his first with the Padres after signing as a minor league free agent Jan. 18.

A 14-year veteran, Gant has 304 homers and 951 RBI with eight teams.

To make room for Gant, San Diego optioned infielder Alex Pelaez to Class AAA Portland of the Pacific Coast League. Pelaez played in just three games after his contract was purchased from the Beavers on Thursday. He had two hits in eight at-bats.
