Tigers get former closer back

DETROIT, May 18 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers, who snapped a seven-game losing streak Friday, got reliever Matt Anderson back Saturday as they continued a three-game series with the Texas Rangers.

Anderson had 22 saves in his first year as Detroit's closer, but blew his only opportunity this season before going on the 15-day disabled list on April 27 with a strained muscle in his right shoulder.

The righthander is 2-1 with a 5.63 ERA in eight appearances. In Anderson's absence, Juan Acevedo has been the closer and has converted four of five save opportunities.

Anderson is among the hardest throwers in the major leagues but has given up 10 hits and four walks with six strikeouts in eight innings this season.

Detroit optioned righthander Fernando Rodney to Class AA Erie of the Eastern League to make room for Anderson.
