Jets Pro Bowl center has surgery

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., May 18 (UPI) -- New York Jets three-time Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae underwent left shoulder surgery on Saturday, but should be ready for the start of training camp on July 26.

Mawae, 31, played most of the 2001 season with a frayed rotator cuff, yet was named to the Pro Bowl for the third straight time.

With Mawae anchoring the line, the Jets ranked fourth in rushing at 128 yards per game and yielded just 19 sacks.

Signed as a free agent by the Jets in 1998, Mawae has started 123 straight games, the longest such streak among centers in the NFL. He spent the first four years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks.
