Hurricanes O'Neill suspended one game

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- The Carolina Hurricanes won their Eastern Conference semifinal opener against the Montreal Canadiens but lost left wing Jeff O'Neill for Game Two on Sunday.

O'Neill was suspended one game by the NHL on Saturday for his hit from behind on Canadiens defenseman Sheldon Souray at 4:34 of the first period of Friday night's game. He received a five-minute major and a game misconduct.

Souray suffered a shoulder injury and was helped off the ice after the hit. He returned early in the second period but played just one shift.

The left wing on Carolina's top line with center Ron Francis and right wing Sami Kapanen, O'Neill had just one goal and one assist in the six-game Eastern Conference quarterfinal series win over New Jersey.
