Atlanta 2, St. Louis 1 (11 innings)

ST. LOUIS, May 4 (UPI) -- Damian Moss tossed seven hitless innings before being removed due to a high pitch count and Chipper Jones settled matters in the 11th inning with a two-run homer as the Atlanta Braves edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, Friday night.

Moss was the story early, holding St. Louis hitless through seven innings. But he walked seven, struck out six and threw 116 pitches. Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox opted to pull the 25-year-old righthander for a pinch hitter in the eighth.

The Cardinals finally got a hit with one out in the bottom of the eighth, a grounder up the middle off lefthander Mike Remlinger, but the game remained scoreless into the 11th.

Gene Stechschulte (2-1) started the 11th for St. Louis and walked Rafael Furcal with one out. After Mark DeRosa grounded out, Stechschulte tried to sneak a 3-0 pitch by Jones, who crushed the offering over the center field wall for his fifth homer of the season.

Atlanta closer John Smoltz came on in the bottom of the 11th and allowed an RBI single to Mike Matheny but retired Eli Marrero on a flyout to left to notch his 10th save in 11 opportunities.
