BOL, Croatia, May 2 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Anne Kremer of Luxembourg and third-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria both were upset Thursday in the second round of the $170,000 Croatian
Bol Ladies Open claycourt tournament
Kremer was eliminated by Mariana Diaz-Oliva of Argentina, 6-2, 7-5. Maleeva was bounced by Asa Svensson of Sweden, 7-5, 6-3.
While two seeds were upset, two others advanced. No. 4 Iva Majoli of Croatia defeated compatriot Jelena Kostanic, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), and No. 7 Tina Pisnik ousted reeling Anna Kournikova of Russia, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-3.
Once on the cusp of the top 10, Kournikova is just 15-13 this year with losses in six of her last seven matches. The Russian beauty struggled to get past unheralded Julia Vakulenko in three sets in her opening-round match. She has dropped 13 of her last 16 sets.
In a second-round match of unseeded players, Libuse Prusova of the Czech Republic defeated Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain, 6-4, 6-3.
Pisnik, Majoli and top seed Elena Dementieva of Russia are the only seeds still alive in the tournament. Majoli is coming off a win in the Family Circle Cup two weeks ago.
On Friday, Pisnik faces Svensson, Majoli meets Russia's Vera Zvonareva and Dementieva takes on Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
Prusova faces Diaz-Oliva in the other quarterfinal, assuring an unseeded player will reach the semifinals.
Last year, Diaz-Oliva reached the final, losing to Angeles Montolio of Spain. This year, Montolio was the fifth seed but was beaten in the first round by Sanchez Lorenzo.
