Byrd (4-2), who allowed home runs to Batista and Melvin Mora in his last start, gave up a solo shot to Segui in the first, a leadoff homer to Batista in the second and a two-run, 435-foot blast to Conine in the third. The Orioles only managed five hits off Byrd in seven innings, but three went over the wall.

The Royals got one run back in the sixth on an RBI single by Carlos Beltran and got within 4-2 on a run-scoring single by Joe Randa in the eighth.

But Segui delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.
