NY Mets 9, Milwaukee 6

NEW YORK, April 28 (UPI) -- Jay Payton had three hits and Jeromy Burnitz burned his former team with a two-run homer in the eighth inning Sunday as the New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 9-6 victory.

Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn and Vance Wilson each had two hits for the Mets, who erased a 5-1 deficit and recorded a season-high 15 hits.

After holding Milwaukee to one hit in each of the first two games of the series, New York saw starter Jeff D'Amico -- a former Brewer -- roughed up for five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

But the Mets' bullpen allowed just one run the rest of the way and the offense was able to rally. Kane Davis recorded the final two outs in the sixth and was rewarded with his first win as a Met.

David Weathers tossed a scoreless inning and Mark Guthrie and Scott Strickland combined to get through the eighth. Closer Armando Benitez surrendered a run in a non-save situation but struck out pinch hitter Matt Stairs with the bases loaded to preserve the Mets' fifth win in six games.

Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets was hit hard, surrendering four runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings. The bullpen offered little relief and lefthanded specialist Ray King (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
