ANAHEIM, Calif., April 27 (UPI) -- Kevin Appier pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Troy Glaus' two-run double highlighted a four-run first inning Friday night to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bouncing back from his worst outing of the season, Appier (2-1) allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out five. The veteran righthander, who gave up a season-high six runs in just 2 2/3 innings in an 8-7 loss at Oakland last Saturday, evened his career record against Toronto at 9-9.

After reliever Al Levine walked Tom Wilson and yielded Dave Berg's single, closer Troy Percival came on and walked Shannon Stewart. But Percival got rookie Eric Hinske to line out and struck out Raul Mondesi and Carlos Delgado to notch his third save.

In his first major league start, Mike Smith (0-1) gave up all four runs. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out one over four innings. He was pitching in place of Chris Carpenter, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

Smith hit David Eckstein with a pitch to open the first inning. Eckstein went to second on Adam Kennedy's sacrifice, advanced to third on Orlando Palmeiro's bunt single and scored on Garret Anderson's single to left field. Glaus followed with a double to right and, one out later, scored on Brad Bullmer's bloop single.

Toronto has allowed its oppponents to score in the first inning of 15 of 21 games this season and allowed 32 runs in the opening inning overall.

The Blue Jays also left 13 runners on base Friday and lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Anderson finished with three hits and is batting .454 (8-for-15) during an eight-game hitting streak for Anaheim, which impoved to 4-9 at home. The Angels have won five of their last six meetings with Toronto.
