DENVER, April 14 (UPI) -- Steven Reinprecht scored on a breakaway with 2:59 remaining in the third period as the Colorado Avalanche nailed down the second seed in the Western Conference by rallying for a 2-2 tie with the disappointing Dallas Stars.
The single point moved the defending Stanley Cup champions one point ahead of San Jose, which settled for the third seed. Colorado will not learn its first-round playoff opponent until
the Los Angeles Kings and Phoenix Coyotes finish the season later Sunday.
Dallas will miss the postseason for the first time since 1996, but had a chance to knock one of its archrivals down a peg. The Stars never trailed and took a 2-1 lead midway through the third period when a shot by defenseman Sergei Zubov from the blue line hit teammate Brenden Morrow in the face and caromed past goaltender Patrick Roy.
Former Star Mike Keane intercepted a pass at his own blue line and threw the puck up ice, sending Reinprecht in alone.
Reinprecht deked around a lunging Marty Turco and slid a backhander under the goalie for his 19th goal.
