Pittsburgh 3, Chicago Cubs 2

PITTSBURGH, April 13 (UPI) -- Shortstop Jack Wilson started a spectacular game-ending double play with a diving stop of Alex Gonzalez's ground ball up the middle Saturday as the Pittsburgh Pirates held on for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

With runners on the corners, Wilson smothered Gonzalez's grounder that appeared headed to center field and made a backhand toss to second baseman Pokey Reese for the force. Reese threw to first, nipping Gonzalez by half a step to complete the double play.

The defensive gem preserved the win for 25-year-old Josh Fogg (2-0), who allowed one run and just three hits with a walk and six strikeouts in his second major league start.

Fogg, who made 11 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox last season, has given up just one run over 14 innings in his two starts this season, both against the Cubs. He pitched seven scoreless last Saturday at Wrigley Field.

But he had to sweat out the ninth this Saturday as the Cubs tried to rally from a 3-1 deficit off closer Mike Williams, who recorded his fifth save in as many chances.

Delino DeShields and Corey Patterson singled in the ninth before DeShields stole third to put the runners on the corners with none out. Williams struck out Sammy Sosa looking on a slow curve, but Fred McGriff lined a single into right field, pulling the Cubs within a run and setting the stage for Wilson to save the game with his glove.

The Pirates snapped a three-game losing streak.

Matt Clement (0-2) also was sharp for Chicago and struck out a career-high 12 while giving up five hits and walking none over seven innings. But Clement surrendered RBI singles to Aramis Ramirez and Craig Wilson in the bottom of the seventh that gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

Keith Osik's solo homer gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the third and the Cubs tied it on DeShields' solo shot in the sixth.

The only other hits off Fogg were a double by Mark Bellhorn in the third and a leadoff single by Sosa in the seventh. McGriff followed Sosa's hit with a walk, but Fogg helped himself by picking Sosa off second.
