SAN DIEGO, April 8 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres roughed up Brian Anderson, took advantage of shoddy defense by the Arizona Diamondbacks and got a gem from Brian Lawrence Monday night en route to an 8-0 victory in their home opener.
Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling have been dominant in their first two starts of the season, combining for four wins, 46 strikeouts and a 0.28 ERA.
But Anderson stuggled in his first start and free agent acquisition Rick Helling was the loser on Friday in Milwaukee. In this one, Anderson (0-1) surrendered five runs -- three earned and six hits over six innings before being lifted for Mike Morgan, who yielded three more runs.
The Padres scored in the first inning on Phil Nevin's two-run homer and took advantage of four errors to add three runs in the fourth.
D'Angelo Jimenez led off with a single and took third when right fielder Danny Bautista had trouble picking up the ball. Jimenez scored on Mark Kotsay's sacrifice fly before Nevin singled.
After Bubba Trammell reached on an infield hit, catcher Rod Barajas was charged with a passed ball, then threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Nevin and Trammell to score.
Lawrence (1-0) had no trouble making the lead stand up, tossing a four-hitter and retiring 15 of the last 17 batters in his second career complete game.
