Pittsburgh 6, Chicago 1

CHICAGO, April 6 (UPI) -- Josh Fogg made his first major league start a spectacular one Saturday, allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings and Rob Mackowiak delivered a clutch run-scoring single in a four-run sixth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 6-1 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.

After making 11 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox in 2001, Fogg (1-0) earned a spot in the Pirates' rotation this spring. The 25-year-old righthander walked two and struck out five.

Fogg protected a 1-0 lead most of the contest and Pittsburgh gave him some breathing room by scoring four times in the sixth. In addition to Mackowiak's RBI single, Jack Wilson beat out a suicide squeeze in the frame.

Joe Beimel tossed a scoreless eighth before Mike Fetters allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Matt Clement made his Cubs' debut and allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Alex Gonzalez had half of the Chicago's six hits.
