DETROIT, April 5 (UPI) -- Danys Baez took a no-hitter into the fifth and allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings Friday to carry the Cleveland Indians past Detroit in the Tigers' home opener, 10-1.
A 24-year-old righthander who emerged as one of the better setup men in the American League last season, Baez (1-0) allowed just two hits but walked six. He struck out six but threw 109 pitches.
Matt Lawton opened the game with a homer for Cleveland, which gave Baez some early breathing room with five runs in the second. Lawton scored three times and Eddie Perez drove in three runs for the Indians.
Detroit starter Mark Redman (0-1), who was brilliant this spring, was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He also walked five.
