Pittsburgh 5, NY Mets 3

NEW YORK, April 3 (UPI) -- Pokey Reese, traded rwice and waived once in the preseason, went 3-for-3 with three RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning Wednesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets.

Slugger Mo Vaughn hit his first homer as a Met and 300th of his career and drove in two runs, but it was the 5-11, 180-pound Reese who stole the show and helped the Pirates win their first game after a season-opening 6-2 loss here on Monday.

Reese was traded by Cincinnati to Colorado on Dec. 18, and Colorado shipped him to Boston a day later. But after failing to reach a contract agreement, the Red Sox released him. He signed with Pittsburgh and won the second base job in spring training.

In his second game with the Pirates, Reese delivered an RBI single in the second inning and lined a two-out, two-run single in the sixth off Steve Trachsel (0-1), giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

Aramis Ramirez drove in Pittsburgh's other two runs with a two-out single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Kip Wells (1-0), acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a five-player deal on Dec. 12, won his first start with the Pirates, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings.

Five relievers -- Joe Beimel, Brian Boehringer, Scott Sauerbeck, Mike Fetters and Mike Williams -- combined to yield just one run and three hits the rest of the way. Williams worked a hitless ninth and struck out two for the save.
